Walk into a room at Little Scholars George Street in Brisbane City and you may not see much that looks like a lesson. There are children building with blocks, a small group deep in the sandpit, someone reading with an educator in a quiet corner. That is by design. The campus follows the Little Scholars Collective Curriculum, an emergent, child-led and play-based approach to early learning. Emergent curriculum means educators watch closely for what children are curious about and build learning around those interests. If a group becomes fascinated by the cranes visible from the windows, the next weeks might include building towers, measuring heights, reading about machines and drawing the skyline. If a child brings back questions from an excursion to the Queensland Museum, educators follow that thread. Learning is planned, but the plan responds to the children. All Australian services work within the national Early Years Learning Framework, which emphasises belonging, being and becoming. The Collective Curriculum sits inside that framework and adds Little Scholars' own emphasis on nature, nurture, love and a sense of belonging. When the George Street campus received its Exceeding National Quality Standard rating, sector coverage highlighted how much of its educational experience is child-led.
Little Scholars George Street | Level 2/400 George St, Brisbane City QLD 4000 | 07 3211 2537
Child-led does not mean unstructured. Educators plan carefully, document progress and make sure each child is building the skills they need across language, numeracy, physical development and social and emotional growth. Each child has an individual Learning Journey, and families can see how learning develops through updates in the Little Scholars app. childcare centre brisbane The approach is supported by several other programs. Conversational reading draws on the Abecedarian approach to build rich language. The Children's Council gives children a genuine say in decisions about their environment. Gardening, Urban Kinder excursions and extracurricular activities such as music and yoga give children different ways to explore and express what they are learning. For parents, the result often shows up at home. Children talk about what they have been investigating, ask new questions and show more confidence in trying things. One parent wrote that she was often pleasantly surprised at what her daughters had learned at George Street, including language and social skills beyond what she expected. FAQ About Childcare Centre Brisbane

Where can I find a childcare centre in Brisbane City close to work?
Little Scholars George Street is on Level 2 of 400 George Street in the North Quarter of the Brisbane CBD, opposite the Brisbane Magistrates Court. It is about a seven-minute walk from Roma Street Station, with Central Station and bus stops on George Street and Adelaide Street close by, which suits parents who commute into the city each day.

What age can a child start childcare in Brisbane?
Many long day care centres in Brisbane accept babies from six weeks old. At Little Scholars George Street, the Nursery room cares for babies from six weeks to around 15 months, and children can stay at the campus right through to the Kindergarten room at five years.

What are childcare opening hours in the Brisbane CBD?
Hours vary from centre to centre, so it is worth checking them against your real working day. Little Scholars George Street is open from 6.30am to 6.30pm, Monday to Friday, which gives CBD parents some room for early starts, late meetings and delayed trains.

Is kindy free in Queensland if my child is in long day care?
Queensland Free Kindy funds 15 hours a week for up to 40 weeks for eligible children in the year before Prep, and it is offered at approved long day care services as well as sessional kindergartens. Little Scholars George Street runs a teacher-led, government-approved Kindergarten program, so eligible families can access Free Kindy hours while their child stays for full-day care.

How does the Child Care Subsidy work in 2026?
The Child Care Subsidy is paid by the Australian Government to approved services and reduces your fees based on your family income. Since 5 January 2026, the 3 Day Guarantee means CCS-eligible families can access at least 72 hours of subsidised care per fortnight. The George Street team can explain how CCS and Free Kindy apply to the days you need when you call 07 3211 2537.

How much does childcare cost in Brisbane City?
Daily fees differ between centres and between rooms, and your out-of-pocket cost depends on your Child Care Subsidy percentage. Little Scholars George Street includes chef-prepared meals and nappies in its care, so it is worth comparing what each centre's fee actually covers. The campus can confirm current fees for your child's room.

What does an Exceeding National Quality Standard rating mean?
Every approved service in Australia is assessed against the National Quality Standard across seven quality areas, and the results are published on the ACECQA national register. Exceeding means assessors found practice that goes beyond the standard. Little Scholars George Street received an overall Exceeding rating in 2024, with Exceeding results in four of the seven quality areas.

Do Brisbane childcare centres provide meals and nappies?
Some do and some ask families to pack them, so it is a good question to ask on every tour. At Little Scholars George Street, children receive three meals a day prepared on site by the campus chef following Feed Australia guidelines, and nappies are supplied.

Where do children play at a childcare centre in the CBD?
Outdoor space is scarce in the city, so indoor play areas matter. Little Scholars George Street has double-storey play forts, a trike track, an indoor sandpit, water play and vegetable and herb gardens, and children head out on regular Urban Kinder excursions to Roma Street Parkland, the Queensland Museum and the State Library of Queensland.

How do I choose the right childcare centre in Brisbane?
Start with the logistics of your week, then check each centre's NQS rating and visit in person to watch how educators interact with the children. Ask how long the team has been there, what is included in the fee and how families are kept informed. At Little Scholars George Street, many educators have been with Little Scholars for ten years or more, and parents receive photos and updates through the Little Scholars app.

Is there easy drop-off and parking for childcare in Brisbane City?
Parking near any CBD centre is limited, so it helps to ask how drop-off works. At Little Scholars George Street, the George Street Parent Valet means staff can meet families in the building lobby or car park for drop-off and pick-up, and there is space to leave a pram at the centre for families who travel by train or bus.

Which inner Brisbane suburbs does a city childcare centre suit?
A CBD centre usually suits families who live in nearby suburbs and work in town. Little Scholars George Street welcomes families from Spring Hill, Petrie Terrace, Paddington, Milton, Kelvin Grove, Herston, South Brisbane, West End, Fortitude Valley, New Farm, Newstead, Teneriffe, Kangaroo Point and Toowong.
