View source for Letterman Jacket Patches and Where They Go

A letterman jacket tells a story. The big letter on the chest says which school you represent, and every patch added after that marks a season, a title, a team or an achievement. If you are building a jacket for yourself, a son or daughter, or a whole team, custom chenille patches are the traditional way to tell that story, and a little planning makes the finished jacket look balanced rather than crowded.

The fuzzy, raised look comes from chenille yarn. Patch makers such as Sew What produce chenille alongside embroidered work, and most schools and booster clubs order letterman chenille patches for the main letter and the larger emblems, then add embroidered pieces for names, years and smaller details. Here is a guide to what usually goes where, along with tips for planning a layout.

A Quick Look at the Tradition

Varsity letters date back to the late nineteenth century, when colleges began awarding letters to athletes who met a standard of participation. The history of the varsity letter shows how the award moved from sweaters to the wool-and-leather jackets common today. The tradition spread to high schools and beyond, and today letters are awarded for academics, band, theater and other activities as well as patch pricing details sports.

Every school sets its own rules for who earns a letter and what can be worn. Before you plan any layout, check with your school's athletic office or activities director for current guidelines.

Common Placement Conventions

There is no universal standard, but many jackets follow a similar pattern. Treat this as general guidance and confirm with your school:

Left chest: the main varsity letter is most often placed here, over the heart.

Right chest: often reserved for the student's name, graduation year or a mascot patch.

Sleeves: activity patches, sport icons, year bars and championship patches are commonly placed along the arms.

Back: the school name, mascot or the student's last name in large lettering.

Letter pins and inserts: small pins or sport inserts may be added to the main letter to show the activity.

Some schools are strict about this layout, while others leave it up to the student. Booster clubs and jacket vendors working with your school can usually tell you what is customary locally.

Designing Custom Chenille Patches

Chenille works best for bold, simple shapes. The looped yarn gives a soft, raised surface but doesn't hold fine detail. Keep these points in mind:

Use strong outlines. Chenille letters usually sit on a felt backing with a contrasting border, which helps them stand out on the jacket body.

Keep shapes large. Letters, mascots and simple icons translate well. Small text belongs in embroidery.

Match school colors. Provide exact color references if you have them, so chenille, felt and embroidery all coordinate.

Combine techniques. Many patches mix chenille with embroidered details, such as a chenille mascot with embroidered eyes or lettering.

Size matters too. The main letter is usually the largest patch on the jacket, while sleeve patches and year bars are smaller. Measure the jacket panels before choosing sizes so everything fits without overlapping seams.

Smaller Patches and Embroidered Badges

Not every piece on a letterman jacket needs to be chenille. Names, years, captain bars, honor roll emblems and event patches are often embroidered because embroidery handles smaller text and more detail. If you need these smaller pieces for a team or club, embroidered badges are worth a look as a companion to the main chenille letter.

Attaching Patches to a Letterman Jacket

Letterman jackets are usually wool bodies with leather or vinyl sleeves. Sewing is the standard and most secure method for both. A tailor or custom patch baseball hats the jacket vendor can attach patches cleanly, especially on leather sleeves, which need a heavy needle and care. Iron-on backings are not ideal for wool or leather, since heat can scorch or mark the material. If you plan to add patches over several years, leave space for future achievements rather than filling every area right away.

Planning Patches for a Whole Team

If you are ordering for a team or booster club, decide on a consistent layout so every jacket matches. Order the main letters and shared patches together for color consistency. Patch orders often have a minimum, such as 50 pieces for most styles, so combining sports or activities into one order can make sense. Allow time for a proof, production and shipping before award nights or banquets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which side does the varsity letter go on?

The left chest is the most common placement, but schools and regions vary. Check with your school before attaching anything.

Can I add patches to a jacket after the first year?

Yes. Many students add patches each season. Planning space early makes it easier to add later achievements neatly.

Are chenille patches washable?

Letterman jackets are usually spot-cleaned or professionally cleaned rather than machine washed, which also protects the chenille and the wool.

A letterman jacket grows with its owner, one patch at a time. Start with patch maker a strong chenille letter, plan the layout with room to spare, follow your school's guidelines, and the jacket will become a keepsake worth holding onto for decades.
