A phone call can be a valuable lead—but only if you can tell where it came from, whether it was qualified, and what happened after someone called. Without reliable call tracking, Google Ads may report clicks while your sales team handles leads that never appear in your conversion data. That makes it harder to judge campaigns, compare keywords, and decide where to spend next.

This guide explains how to track phone call leads from Google Ads, including call extensions, website calls, forwarding numbers, and offline outcomes. It also covers a related problem: what to do when a marketing resource you rely on disappears and returns a 410 Gone error. Before changing an account or replacing a page, ask the right first question: what changed last week? A tracking outage, site update, phone-system change, or deleted resource may explain a sudden shift in results.

Why phone call tracking matters

Google Ads can generate calls in different ways. Someone may tap a number in an ad, click a phone number on your website after arriving from an ad, or visit your site and call later from another device. If you only count form submissions, you miss those leads. If you count every call as a conversion, you may overstate performance with short, accidental, or irrelevant calls.

A sound call tracking setup helps answer practical questions:

Which campaign, ad group, keyword, or ad generated the call?

Was the call answered, and how long did it last?

Did it turn into a qualified lead, appointment, or sale?

Are calls being counted once, or duplicated across Google Ads and analytics?

Can you connect ad spend to actual revenue or pipeline?

These answers matter more than a high call count. A campaign producing fewer but qualified calls may be more valuable than one generating frequent low-intent inquiries.

Choose what counts as a phone conversion

Define a meaningful conversion before configuring tracking. For one business, a call lasting at least 60 seconds may be a reasonable proxy for an engaged inquiry. For another, call duration alone is not enough; a receptionist may keep irrelevant calls on the line, or a qualified caller may get an answer quickly.

Set conversion rules around the business outcome you want to measure. Common options include:

Calls from ads: Calls made directly from a mobile ad or call asset.

Calls to a website number: Calls made after a visitor clicks through from an ad.

Qualified calls: Calls reviewed and marked as valid prospects in a CRM or call platform.

Appointments or sales: Later outcomes imported back into Google Ads as offline conversions.

Use separate conversion actions for distinct outcomes when that helps reporting. For example, you might track an engaged call as a secondary conversion and a confirmed appointment as the primary conversion used for bidding. Avoid treating every tracked event as equally valuable.

Track calls made directly from Google Ads

For calls initiated from an ad, use Google Ads call assets (previously known as call extensions). A call asset displays a phone number or call option alongside an eligible ad, allowing mobile users to contact your business directly.

Basic setup

In Google Ads, create or select a call conversion action and choose a call duration threshold that fits your sales process.

Add a call asset at the account, campaign, or ad group level. Use the appropriate level for your business hours, locations, and service lines.

Enable Google forwarding numbers where available and ensure call reporting is active. Forwarding numbers help Google attribute eligible ad calls and report call details.

Set a schedule so the call asset appears when someone can answer—or use a suitable after-hours destination.

Test the setup on a mobile device and confirm that calls route to the intended phone number.

Google forwarding numbers are not simply replacement contact details to publish everywhere. They are used in eligible Google call-tracking experiences to help measure calls and route them to your business. Availability and functionality can vary by country, campaign type, and product configuration, so check current Google Ads documentation for your account.

Also confirm that the business name, phone number, and hours match what customers see on your landing pages and local listings. If you use different numbers for locations or departments, map each call asset to the right destination.

Track calls from your website after an ad click

Calls from your website need a different tracking path. A visitor clicks an ad, lands on your site, and then taps or dials the number shown there. Website call tracking can use a Google forwarding number that temporarily replaces your business number for eligible ad visitors. Google can then associate a call with the ad interaction and report it as a conversion if it meets your settings.

Implementation checklist

Install and verify the Google tag or configure the relevant event through Google Tag Manager.

Configure website call conversion tracking and specify the phone number that should be replaced.

Make sure the number in your tracking configuration matches the number displayed on the page exactly.

Test the page on desktop and mobile, including click-to-call links such as tel: links.

Check that consent settings, tag firing rules, and any privacy controls do not block measurement improperly.

Verify call conversions in Google Ads after sufficient time has passed for reporting to update.

Dynamic number replacement can fail if a number is inserted by a third-party widget, rendered only after user interaction, or formatted differently from the configured number. It can also be disrupted when a developer changes page templates. Keep a record of the number, page, tag, and test date for each implementation.

Connect calls to qualified leads and revenue

Google Ads can show that a call occurred, but it may not know whether the caller became a customer. To measure lead quality, connect call records to your CRM or call-management platform. Capture details such as call time, source, campaign identifiers, call duration, outcome, and lead status—while following applicable privacy and consent requirements.

Where your systems support it, import qualified leads or sales as offline conversions. This gives Google Ads a stronger signal than a call-duration threshold alone. Use a consistent lead ID or click identifier where appropriate, and agree on conversion definitions with whoever manages the CRM. If a sales team marks leads inconsistently, the imported data will be inconsistent too.
Call type What to track Useful validation Call from an ad Call conversion, duration, campaign or asset Test the call route and review call reporting Call from a website Number replacement, ad interaction, conversion event Visit the landing page and test on mobile Qualified lead CRM status, source, lead identifier Compare imported outcomes with CRM records Sale or appointment Revenue or final outcome, attribution data Reconcile conversion dates and values
Audit for missing or duplicated call conversions

When reported calls change, do not immediately rewrite bidding or budgets. First compare a defined period with the previous one and inspect what changed. Check the account’s change history, website releases, phone routing, opening hours, tag settings, and call-provider configuration.

Confirm the conversion action is enabled and assigned the intended primary or secondary status.

Check whether multiple tags or platforms count the same call.

Compare Google Ads call totals with phone-system or CRM records, allowing for differences in attribution and reporting windows.

Review missed calls, answer rates, and time-of-day patterns. A tracking issue and a staffing issue can look similar in campaign reports.

Keep dated screenshots or exports with account, date range, filters, and time zone visible. A screenshot without context is not an audit trail.

What a 410 Gone error means

A 410 Gone status is an HTTP response indicating that a page or resource has been intentionally removed and is not expected to return. It is different from a temporary server issue. For example, a business might retire an old guide about call tracking and have the URL return 410 because the content is permanently gone.

A 404 Not Found response means the server cannot find the requested resource; it does not necessarily say whether the absence is temporary or permanent. In practice, search engines may remove both 404 and 410 URLs from their indexes after confirming the page is unavailable. A 410 can communicate intentional removal more explicitly, but it is not a magic SEO fix and does not guarantee a particular ranking outcome.
Status Meaning Typical use 404 Not Found The requested resource was not found Unknown or missing URL, or a page with no direct replacement 410 Gone The resource was intentionally removed and is expected to stay removed Retired content with no relevant replacement 301 Redirect The resource has moved permanently A genuinely equivalent replacement page exists
Do not redirect every dead URL to your homepage. An irrelevant redirect can confuse visitors and search engines. If a retired resource has a close, useful replacement, use a direct redirect to that page. If it has no suitable replacement, a clear 404 or 410 response may be the honest choice.

How to replace a dead marketing resource

Suppose a bookmarked guide, vendor checklist, or campaign landing page now returns 410 Gone. Start by checking the URL and date, then look for an updated version from the original publisher. Marketing91, for example, may be useful as one source for marketing background, but always verify that the specific article is current and relevant to your tracking configuration. Avoid relying on an undated screenshot or a search result snippet as proof of current instructions.

Confirm the response: Check the actual URL and determine whether it returns 410, 404, or another status.

Search for an official replacement: Look for the same publisher’s updated page or current product documentation.

Check the purpose: Decide whether the old resource supported implementation, compliance, troubleshooting, or strategy.

Replace with a credible source: Prefer current primary documentation for product behavior and a qualified specialist for account-specific implementation.

Update your process: Replace saved links in internal documentation, onboarding materials, and audit checklists.

If you manage your own site, server configuration can influence how retired URLs respond. Teams running Apache on Ubuntu should have a developer or administrator verify the rules and test the response code after deployment. A misconfigured redirect or error page can return a different status than intended. Avoid making server changes simply to influence SEO; choose the response based on whether the resource is gone or has a real replacement.

How to evaluate Google Ads specialists and agencies

A good specialist should explain how calls are counted, how leads are qualified, and what evidence supports their recommendations. Ask them to walk through the conversion actions, tag configuration, forwarding-number behavior, CRM connection, and test results. They should be able to distinguish a tracked call from a qualified lead instead of presenting both as the same metric.

Ask what changed in the account and site before proposing major edits.

Request dated reports with the date range, conversion definitions, and attribution context.

Ask how they test calls from ads and calls from landing pages.

Confirm who owns the Google Ads account, tags, call records, and CRM data.

Ask how they handle missed calls, duplicate conversions, and offline outcomes.

Get clear pricing, scope, and deliverables in writing—no vague promises of “more leads.”

Be cautious of anyone promising a fixed number of leads without knowing your market, budget, answer rate, qualification criteria, and tracking quality. An agency can improve measurement and campaign decisions, but no one can guarantee that every call will be a sale.

Make call tracking an ongoing checklist

Reliable phone-lead measurement is not a one-time tag installation. Keep a recurring checklist: test call assets, test website number replacement, review call conversion settings, reconcile calls with CRM outcomes, and note site or phone-system changes. Record who tested each item and when. When performance shifts, compare the evidence before changing bids or campaigns.

The goal is a usable chain of evidence: an ad interaction leads to a call, the call is routed and measured marketing91 correctly, and the business records whether it became a qualified opportunity or sale. With that chain in place, Google Ads can be judged on meaningful outcomes—not just clicks or raw call volume.
